A Winter Ancient Glacial Lake Wisconsin Destination: Roche-A-Cri State Park

February 1

Although it will take a little effort, it is well worth a winter visit to Roche-A-Cri State Park, located in Adams County.  A short hike or snow shoe from the winter parking area (Czech Avenue, just south and west of the main park entrance on Hwy 13 north of Freedom) will bring the visitor to the iconic Roche-A-Cri Mound.  The sandstone bluff, a recognized state natural area within the park, towers 300+ feet above the Central Sand Plains.  Around 14,000 years ago, Roche-A-Cri Mound was an island surrounded by a vast lake, the former Ancient Glacial Lake Wisconsin.  Imagine waves lapping at the top portion of this pillar of stone!  The mound is also recognized for an important piece of Native American history—petroglyphs and pictographs artistically sketched onto the rock face thousands of years ago.   Miles of trails in the park will lead the adventurer through a beautiful mixed woods with towering pine trees. Come back in the summer for a great camping experience or to scale the stairway that brings you to the top of the mound for its spectacular vistas of Central Wisconsin.  More information here.
