Flambeau River State Forest
The Flambeau River State Forest is a sprawling 90,000-acre wilderness built around 75 miles of the National Wild and Scenic Flambeau River. It is one of Wisconsin's best paddling destinations: the South Fork has Class I and II rapids for canoeists, while the North Fork delivers quieter stretches suited to fishing from a kayak. The forest also contains the Flambeau Trail System, a network of hiking and cross-country ski trails that winds through old-growth hemlock and white pine.
Camping ranges from nine rustic canoe campsites along the river, first-come and free, to Connie's Campground with vault toilets and fire rings. The Flambeau is also one of Wisconsin's better musky rivers; the deeper pools below rapids fish best from late June through September.
