Swan Lake Wildlife Area
Swan Lake Wildlife Area is a 2,466 acre property located one mile east of Portage off of Highways 33 and P in Columbia County. The property consists of approximately 2,000 acres of wetlands (primarily cattail marsh), 100 acres of grassland and 366 acres of wooded habitat (oak and aspen woodlands). The Fox River flows through the Swan Lake Wildlife Area in a northwesterly direction from Swan Lake on the east. The property, designated as a wildlife area in 1963, has four parking areas and no designated trail. An abandoned dike and water control structure is located in the southwest portion of the marsh, providing foot access to the marsh. Access to this property is limited due to the expansive wetlands and limited public uplands. Canoeing and fishing are popular activities along the Fox River portion of the property, and hunting is a dominant activity in the fall.
