Wisconsin Rapids Heritage River Walks
HERITAGE RIVER WALKS
Three fascinating river walks await visitors in downtown Wisconsin Rapids, each filled with engaging stories of the people who preceded local residents in time, and the places that mark this community’s rich heritage. Each easy walk is on paved sidewalks and take only 45 minutes to one hour to complete.
There are individual trail maps available for Walk 1, 2, and 3. Each map includes historical information. Walk 1 beckons visitors to the original “River City” a frontier community with sawmills, tanneries, foundries, breweries, boarding houses, hotels, churches, homes and the city’s original courthouse. Walk 2 describes the merging of the east and west sides of the Wisconsin River – Grand Rapids and Centralia into Grand Rapids – it wasn’t until 1920 that Wisconsin Rapids got its name! Walk 3 highlights “Quality Row”, the fine homes constructed in the early twentieth century.
Visitors can download a Kid’s River Walk Detective trivia sheet full of easy and fun historical education, making the walks even more relevant for entire families!
