Caves Creek Fishery Area
Caves Creek Fishery Area is a high quality crystal clear trout stream. There have been stream bank improvement projects throughout the system enhancing the already excellent fishing opportunities. The state owns and manages 823 acres in several scattered parcels stretched along the 14-mile stream corridor.
Caves Creek has areas of natural brook trout reproduction throughout the entire stream and is regarded as one of the better brook trout streams in southern Wisconsin. Fishing pressure is heavy on stream sections accessible to the public.
The shoreline vegetation includes shrub carr, swamp hardwood forest, upland forest and grassland. In the upland areas, former agricultural fields have been abandoned and are reverting to natural vegetation while some areas have been planted to pine, prairie or continue to be farmed. The diverse habitat is home to a wide variety of songbirds and game species.
A wide variety of outdoor recreation is offered at this site, although there are no developed sites other than parking areas. Activities include: bird and wildlife watching, fishing, hunting, hiking (no designated trails), canoeing and snowshoeing in winter.
The Caves Creek Fishery Area is located in northwestern Marquette County about two miles northwest of the Village of Westfield. US Highway 51 runs through the center of the property approximately 65 miles north of Madison.
