Colburn Wildlife Area

Colburn Wildlife Area provides nearly 5,000 acres of lowland shrubby marsh and aspen and oak forest to support a wide variety of wildlife species. Visitors may see herons and egrets in the marshes that run along Carter Creek , which runs through the middle of the Colburn Wildlife Area, and Big Dry Creek. Most of the Area was purchased in 1947 for its value to forest wildlife. Management on the property has been geared to maintain the forested oak areas and provide different age classes of aspen trees.

The wooded areas are attractive to many nesting songbird species and numerous woodpeckers. Signature bird species include sandhill cranes, ruffed grouse and American black duck. Rare species include sedge wren, veery, and pileated woodpecker. Bald eagles are frequently seen hunting over the Area, which is just a few miles east of the Wisconsin River. The Area also supports many mammals including deer, badgers, woodchucks, mink, fox and coyotes.
