Levis/Trow Mound Recreation Area

The Levis/Trow Mound Recreational Area provides miles of hiking, biking, and cross-country ski trails that wind and loop through a portion of the 133,000-acre Clark County Forest. The Area features sandstone bluffs or mounds, one of the unique natural features visitors will enjoy here amid the “Driftless Area” of Wisconsin. The Area also offers camping opportunities; the trailhead campground includes 8 non-electric campsites.

The Area is managed to maintain and protect the natural environment and wildlife habitat of Levis/Trow Mound while providing recreational opportunities and a sustained supply of raw forest products.

Mountain Biking in the Area is considered some of the best in the Midwest. Trails range from beginner to advanced, and consists of 19 miles of single track and another 15 miles of cross-country ski trails. The more advance trails ascend and descend the mounds, while the easier and intermediate routes lie near the bases and the surrounding forest.

Hiking at Levis/Trow offers more than 34 miles. There is a 1.5 mile self-guided interpretive trail.  Hiking can be especially rewarding in the spring and fall when emerging plant life and autumn colors abound. Favorite trails ascending the mounds include: Northface, Cliffhanger, Toad Road, and Upper Hermosa. Another challenge is Goat Dance, a 3-mile hike located just to the north-west of Trow Mound.

Cross-Country Skiing – 15 miles of groomed ski trails and an additional 19 miles of backcountry routes. Skiers will find expertly groomed rails for skating and classic techniques, along with ungroomed backcountry routes. The more advanced trails are located to the northwest on Trow Mound, while the easy and intermediate trails lie near the base of the mounds. Backcountry skiers can climb the narrow and difficult single track to the tops of the mounds for a spectacular view of the surround countryside. Trails are open throughout the snow season.
