Niebull School House
If you are lucky enough to be an Adams County 4th grader you may spend a day of your academic year in the one-room 1897 Niebull School House. Upon arrival, students will change into period dress and then first visit rooms of the historic McGowan House right next door. Interpreters, also in period dress, will assist the students as they set the table, bake cookies in the wood stove, and even churn butter. After this, the students will go to “school”. Students will delight in finding original desks, a wood stove, a clock, world globe, and other period furnishings to help them image what school days were like more than 100 years ago. All the lessons and accompanying activities have been specifically designed for 4th grade Wisconsin Department of Public Standards in Social Studies.
The Niebull School House was restored and moved to a site adjoining the historic McGowan House, owned and managed by the Adams County Historical Society. The school house is open to the public when the McGowan House is open (Saturdays from May through September). See that site description for details, or visit the Society’s website.
