Schmeeckle Reserve and Visitor Center

Schmeeckle Reserve is a 280-acre sanctuary within the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) campus. The Reserve was created to protect and restore native ecological communities, serve as an outdoor classroom for students and teachers, and provide recreational opportunities to all visitors.

The Reserve has five miles of trails and boardwalks that travel through a patchwork of forest, prairie, wetland, pond, and oak savanna habitats. The diverse habitats of the Reserve support many local wildlife species included deer, fox, turkey, squirrels, birds and frogs. Its bird list includes an impressive 218 species, with 33 species of mammals recorded on the site. In the spring, the chorus of frogs and toads sing nightly. Hiking, jogging, biking, and snowshoeing are permitted.

The 24-acre Lake Joanis offers an excellent opportunity for fishing, canoeing, wildlife watching, or simply relaxing [Note: swimming and motor boats are strictly prohibited].

The Reserve’s Visitor Center houses both the Wisconsin Land of Wealth Museum and Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame. It serves as headquarters for the Green Circle Trail. There is an information desk, gift shop and meeting room. Entry and parking are free. Public programs are offered in the spring and fall.
